About Us

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Track Cycling Nelson is an organisation that aims to provide cycling as a sport, in a safe, exciting and supportive environment.  It is professionally managed by committed members of the Nelson and Tasman community.  Track Cycling Nelson intends to provide the community with opportunities to participate in safe, well-organised events, either as riders, volunteers or coaches.  Track Cycling Nelson is here to offer advice, coaching and support to develop cycling skills; and to promote the sport of cycling to encourage increased participation.

Our HISTORY

The modern form of Track Cycling Nelson has its roots in a June 1895 meeting held in Sigleys Hall to consider the feasibility of forming an amateur athletic and cycling club. This duly went ahead, officers were elected and the club was named The Nelson Amateur Athletic & Cycling Club.

At a committee meeting, a week later, the constitution and rules were passed and it appears that the club functioned until 1898 when it apparently went into recess. The club reformed for two seasons from 1926-28 then went into recess again until it was reconstituted at a meeting on 22nd January 1935, with support from the Motueka Amateur Athletic Club, which was active at the time.

Later in the year on the 5th June, the Nelson Amateur Harrier Club was formed and it was resolved that it function as a branch of the Nelson Amateur Athletic & Cycling Club. The Cycling and Athletic sections of the club split into separate entities in the early 1990s after the Nelson Cycling Club Incorporated became a separate identity on 2 November 1989.

The Nelson Cycling Club Inc. changed its name to Cycling Nelson Incorporated on 29 September 2000.

Cycling Nelson has had a wealth of experienced officials over the years with three members being nationally recognised. Barry Newport and Brian Harford became UCI National Commissaires in October 1982 with Ray Newport qualifying with the same recognition in March 1983. All three then went on to officiate at the 1983 Junior World Cycling Championships in Wanganui. Barry and Ray went on to also officiate at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. All three have officiated at numerous national championship events and tours over the years.
