NATIONAL TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS – INVERCARGILL MARCH 2007

How close is that? The finish of the second ride between Auckland and Canterbury in the Women’s Sprint Semi final. Declared a Dead Heat.
WOW what a facility. That is the first impressions on entering New Zealand’s first indoor velodrome complex.
After three years of not attending the track nationals I decided that as the venue was the new indoor velodrome in Invercargill, it was time to get the starting gun out and head south for the week.
From the very onset of racing on Tuesday morning records started to tumble. The excitement and competitiveness of everyone was on a high and the complex proved itself within hours of the start. The weather outside was not nice so therefore the racing could not have been held albeit for the complex.
Attached to the existing Stadium Southland just about all sports are catered for. Netball, basketball, squash, indoor soccer and adjacent is the all weather athletic track also.
It is pleasing to note that since the Nationals finished and a petition was presented to CNZ for having the Nationals there again next year, it has been decided that the 2008 Nationals will be held in Invercargill. I also note that a remit has gone to the CNZ AGM for having the Nationals there every year until the North Island gains a similar complex.
If you like the excitement of track racing then you should consider the trip south for the 2008 Nationals and experience the venue for yourself.
Cheers
Brian
