Nelson 80

           Handicap Race

   2009: Sunday September 20

    The Olympic Trophy

          awarded for line honours

The Nelson 80 goes back a long way............

This 80km event has been on the Cycling Nelson calendar for

many years in which time a variety of courses have been used.

In the 'good old days' groups of riders would travel north from

Christchurch for the weekend, racing the Marlborough 80

on the Saturday before heading to Nelson for another '80'

on Sunday.

Many 'famous' names of the past are etched on the event trophy

(Olympic Cup) which, on it's day, was a sought after achievement.

Check out the past winners here.

The course:

Starting at the club rooms at Redwoods Valley

(Kart Track)    heading over the Moutere and

down to Edwards Road.  At this point a left turn

takes the riders through Waiwhero to Ngatimoti

to turn left and follow the Motueka River Valley

to Woodstock.  A left turn takes riders through

to Dovedale  via beautiful rural, and normally,

very quiet roads.  At Dovedale another left turn

brings the riders to the infamous Neudorf Hill

before coming back to the  Moutere Highway.

A right turn at Prices Corner points everyone

homeward - with just another climb of the

Moutere, a fast descent, then home is in almost

in sight.  A left into Redwood Road lines everyone

   up for the sprint home.
